My Testimony

I was fourteen years old when tragedy struck! It was around 6:00 PM, getting dark, and raining. I was pedaling my bike across the highway and was hit by a car driving 55 MPH. I was thrown from my bike and landed twenty feet from the place where I was hit. All the traffic stopped! The car was totally smashed in and the front hood was compressed into the back seat. Blood was everywhere as my limp and unconscious body lay in the middle of the intersection.

Thank God, my neighbor was driving by and saw me get hit by the car.  Immediately, she ran over to my severely injured body and proceeded to clear my air passages because I was choking on my blood.  Additionally, an off duty ambulance was driving by just seconds after I was hit.  The EMT ran over to my bloody body, put an oxygen mask over my face, and rushed me to the hospital.

I was in a coma for two weeks, had three hemorrhages in my brain, and was completely unrecognizable.  My nose was literally smashed into my face and my right eye was cut so badly the physicians believed I had lost it.  My mouth and lips were demolished and I had reconstructive surgery to correct the damage to my face.  I was given a quart of blood and was kept alive on life support.  The surgeons performed an emergency tracheotomy surgery to my throat and implanted a gastro-feeding tube in my stomach.  With just a one percent chance of survival and having three days to live, my parents were told I would die.

But God had a different plan for me…

Every day, my parents and many people from church would pray for me.  They would line up around my hospital bed and stand in the hallways praying for my healing, asking God to save me.

Fourteen days later, despite the doctors’ prediction I would die, my eyes opened.  It was a miracle!  I was transferred to a rehabilitation center for six months where I re-learned how to walk, talk, eat, bathe, and function as a human all over again.  I put in perspective what it was like to be disabled.

While I was recovering in the hospital, I realized the amazing work God had done in my life and accepted His free gift of salvation. Hopefully, you’ve received this great gift too!  If not, just ask.  Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again” (John 3:3).

When I was released from the hospital, I was asked to speak at several churches and youth groups, sharing my testimony and how God was working in my life. I was amazed at the response I saw to the gospel. It was at this point that I began to sense God’s calling into pastoral ministry and was able to confirm that calling through various people and opportunities. My desire to know and serve Christ has been nurtured and deepened over the years and has been expressed through the different ministries God has given me. Through a commitment to servant leadership, I strive to proclaim the Good News of God’s love, help others encounter Him, nurture their spiritual development, equip them for effective ministry, and build up the body of Christ.

  1. God is so good. I am sure the doctors and nurses in that hospital were greatly affected by the outpouring prayer, and the miracle of your recovery. And now God continues to draw people in through your story. Keep preaching, brother.

    • The first thing about this story that caught my attention was the ambulance (off duty) driving by. This was the first angel. The doctors and nurses were the second angels.
      This story is very much like one that Brian Fleming, a war vet from Afganistan wrote on his Facebook page. He too was blown up and had his face and body parts torn apart. He too was put back together and now he works for the Lord and has helped many other people find their way to Jesus Christ and helps war veterans as well. Thank you for your service in the name of the Lord. Without men like you, we would not have the beautiful words you write or be able to pass them on to others seeking to know more about Christianity and our Lord. May God bless us all and bring us home to peace. This is a wonderful testimony, Joe. Thanks for sharing it.

        • Brother Joe, you have no idea how your testimony is God sent at the our my family needs ecouragemnt the most. I saw that you liked my message “ambassadors for Christ” so i wanted to see who is this guy who likes my message, of course God’s message. How is your testimony applicable, well today my brother fell off a ladder and injured his neck and spine. They perfomed a surgery on him but they did not so much give him hope to walk again. I am writing this from the hospital. Anyway, we gathered in one room, cried and prayed that what the doctors are limited to accomplish, the great doctor Jesus Christ will bring Him through. What He did for you, may He do it for my brother for His glory. I read your testimony to my family. It is a great encouragement. Do keep the Olang’s in your prayers, we are all born again.     • I was in critical condition and the doctors knew it. They said, “A very powerful God must have healed you.” And He did!

  3. Joe, thanks so much for sharing your testimony and amazing story of survival with us. Long before I met my hubby, he was in a horrible wreck while driving his truck and woke up after a month-long coma to some of the same things you experienced. His entire left side was paralyzed from a TBI and he also had to learn to walk, talk and tend to his needs again. When I see the scar from his trach, I always thank God for preserving his life for both of us!

  6. How close to eternity we all are. How important it is live for Christ. Philippians 1:21 (NIV) – “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Through prayer, God turned around a terrible event and got your attention. He always turns cursing to blessing.   8. I agree with Diane – God did have a purpose in mind for your life, and you are living that purpose by inspiring others and telling of Gods goodness. Your story reminds me of Paul is some ways, Paul was given a second chance on the road to Damascus, saved for a greater purpose, you were saved on that tragic night.also for a greater purpose.   19. Wow. What an amazing testimony of God’s grace, mercy, and love… He could have taken you to be with Him that day, but instead He’s given you a miracle that you can share with others. Not only victory over odds but put all the odds in your favor! A neighbor witnessing, an off duty EMT driving by at that exact moment, praying parents and church family, and numerous doctors who were given wisdom to care for you despite their belief that you were going to die. God used a moment that should have ended very differently (at the very least left you paralyzed and mangled) and dramatically stepped in to show His power in your weakest moment. Talk about radical! I am so thankful that he decided to keep you here for awhile to encourage others and teach the Word! I live with lots of disabilities myself…from a broken neck in 2000 and brain surgery in 2006…but God saved me for a purpose, and he uses even my disabilities.   22. Faith can mean many things to different people. I am happy for you that you have had a miraculous recovery. We belong to a volunteer organization, and one of our members is thankfully making a slow recovery from an accident over a month ago. I truly believe that every single prayer or good thought from whatever faith or non-faith based goodness that individuals offer is helping.

  25. Joe, great testimony. Just six weeks ago I had a stroke. My right side was paralyzed. Today I am almost back to normal. I keep tell people that it was more of a spiritual experience than physical. I am a very independent person. I was put in a place whereI had to ask others for help even with the simplest tasks. Our independence can keep us from the fullness of our relationship with God. It was the doctor who came in and asked to pray for my healing that help bring my thinking around. Then the two nurses who came in as I lay helpless, unable to even go to the bathroom. They prayed with me. Joe, pray with and for others even though the doctors say there is no hope. There is a close similarity between physical healing and restoration in our relationship with God (salvation). God bless you as the Holy Spirit gives you words to encourage others.

    • Good to hear how the Lord is working in your life. It is amazing how He uses suffering and difficult time to draw us to Him.

      • I think Christians believe they have to have all their ducks in order before they can serve. What this experience has taught me is the I not “all self sufficient.” Even if I have to crawl He will make a way. The real question is do we understand the call to serve Him and what are willing to do even though the odds are against us. He didn’t promise us a perfect life but He did say He would never leave us.

        My He empower you to go way beyond any and all expectations.

      • I am just about 100% back to normal and I am still improving. My compass has be readjusted to proclaim Him more than ever.

  28. We serve an amazing God who works miracles. Despite the evil one’s plan to destroy you, God ordained everything in such a way that you would survive and serve Him. From your neighbor, the off duty EMT being immediately available in those early critical minutes…

    I am a physician anesthesiologist and I get chills when I think how badly injured you were. You had a compromised airway as well as a severe traumatic brain injury complicated by blood loss… Intact survival from such an accident is truly a miracle.

I would value your prayers Pastor Joe, my Mum phoned to let me know my Brother is in hospital fighting for his life, his kidneys are failing and our little furry friend Monty is also very sick and in a animal hospital, all in one day, I commented a few times but it is hard to focus, I should do a Post and ask for prayer but I’m feeling a bit lost, please pray I’m very worried, Alfred is not a Christian but I hope he remembers what we have shared with him over the years even if he rejected it at the time.

    My little Monty was so scared when we left him with the Vet, he is so gentle and loving, he just did not understand.

    I pray that as Your Holy Spirit rests upon him, he will be made of quick understanding because You, LORD, have anointed and qualified him to preach the Gospel to the meek, the poor, the wealthy, and the afflicted.   37. I am so-o-o glad we serve a mighty God. Your testimony brought back memories of a car crash I was in during my college years. It’s a very long story, but basically, my car hit a large concrete culvert head-on doing 60 and exploded into flames. Four friends were also in the car. I turned out to be the most seriously injured and like you, I should have died. But, God had other plans. Many miracles surround this story, including angels whom I could almost touch who were at the scene. I could take you to that same spot today and point out the location where I strongly sensed their presence. On top of everything else, despite our being in a fire trap, none of us were burned! And, the Lord sent a truck driver to rescue us. Praise the Lord.

Regardless of what medical science says, regardless of what human wisdom would believe, regardless of what we might accept due to our limited faith, God has the final word. I’ll enjoy following you for many reasons; all of which revolve around our great God. Do you have any long term issues from your accident or do you have more blog posts about it? ~Blessings!

    • Glad to hear your prayers were answered and your son is a living miracle! While I do have a few long-term issues, I have learned to compensate for them. Nobody has a clue I was ever injured unless I tell them. I am a living miracle and praise God for my healing.

  45. Bro. Joe is always so graciously reading my first ever blog, an my very week (formally) educated interpretation of our Father’s word, the true word.
    I am greatly inspired by Bro. Joe and his publicized sermons, as I commented unto him today in response to an article / sermon I posted back in 2012 (not long after we lost our entire home to a fire). I said that when I become more wise in my walk with Christ, I pray I am half the diciple he has become, as I always gain knowledge of use in one form or another from his writings.
    I pray for his ministry often, for the Father says; “ye who pray for your brother shall receive great reward.” And He knows I need all the reward He feels due me. But I pray for Bro. Joe for he is a just, upright man of God. Keep laying it down my brother!

    God has also saved my life even when I thought He did not exist because of being deceived as a young Teenager and even after falling into sin but not away when I was going to my first Church He rescued and healed me and when I was confused about His Truth because of all the different teachings, He healed me and He lead me to ask for His wisdom and The Holy Spirit and with everything He has worked them all out for good and I have no doubt He will continue to do so with me and all those who Love Him.

Your a Miracle in more ways than one Pastor Joe, I was told by an Elder that God doesn’t do Miracles today even after I shared mine, I only wish he could read your Testimony, perhaps I should cut and paste it but maybe he would doubt it like he did mine and other peoples but if he could see into your heart and catch a glimpse of your Love for others he would have no more doubts, you also have the Maturity and wisdom that normally comes with living many years, your Parents are indeed blessed.

  58. Pastor, first thanks for stopping by my little spot on this wide world web! God sent you! Why? Because when I started this blog a while ago, I asked the Lord to lead me to those that would continue to educate, encourage and inspire me, as I am a firm believer that “old dogs can learn new tricks.” As a servant of the Lord, I try to do these very same things for that is what our Lord has called me to do and I have been involved in online ministry since the mid 90’s when I recognized this “new horizon” of opportunity. I still have an outreach ministry, I still disciple one on one or one to family as the Lord leads, but no longer Pastor a church. If anything, my ministry has actually grown when I realized I had the whole world at my finger tips.
    Blogging though is fairly new to me, but oh what a glorious medium to not only reach others but to commune with others of like belief without the discord of labels and such. I have met so many fellow brothers and sisters through this medium who all have the same Love and Relationship with our Redeemer, Christ Jesus. Yes, there are some doctrinal differences from time to time, but the Holy Spirit has been faithful and gracious in His leading.
    My favorite Book and Chapter in the Bible is 1John 4. But I love so many. I will not debate Scripture but rather try to show that the Bible as a whole has been condensed into Jesus’ words to those trying to trip Him up; Matthew 22:36, “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”
    37 Jesus said to him,” ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
    38 “This is the first and great commandment.
    39 “And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
    40 “On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

    We are not under the Law, but we ARE under the dispensation of Grace, yet still serving a Just God. I truly don’t know why I am going on about all this at this time, but for some reason, I feel led to share with you. I think this is what let’s me fellowship (in print) and commune with others who love Christ and have developed a relationship with Him despite some doctrinal differences.
    Anyway, enough “preaching to the choir” but what I would really like to say is that what I have read so far, I love and find it inspiring, encouraging and thoroughly uplifting! I am going to put your site on my Links page so others may find you as I believe they will be uplifted as well. I truly believe that we are at a time when the Body of Christ is truly coming together in service and purpose. Not everyone is joining this Body because it is not a religious body, but a spiritual one and I thank God and His Spirit for His continual leading to others like you.
